Diaspora (Commonwealth Union) _ The Akwa Ibom State Government has forged agreements with the London Borough of Southwark and Akwa Ibom indigenes in the United Kingdom to facilitate exchanges on educational and cultural levels. During meetings with the Mayor of Southwark, Michael Situ, and Akwa Ibom indigenes in the UK, the parties discussed twinning the London Borough with the capital city of Akwa Ibom. The proposed alliance aims to bring mutual benefits to both regions. The Mayor expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration’s potential benefits and suggested a twinning partnership between the Borough and Uyo Local Government Area, an idea welcomed by Governor Umo Eno.
The Governor proposed educational and cultural exchanges on Government-to-Government (G2G) and Business-to-Business (B2B) levels. The exchange would involve teachers and students from both regions sharing knowledge and insights into teaching methods and other education-related aspects. Governor Eno, during a meeting with Akwa Ibom citizens in the UK, briefed them on the promises and prospects of the ARISE Agenda and the diaspora opportunities it presents. He expressed his readiness to collaborate with the diaspora throughout his tenure, emphasizing the diaspora’s potential positive contribution to the state’s economic development.
The Governor also attended the London Political Summit, where he marketed Akwa Ibom as an ideal destination for investment and leisure. At the summit, Governor Eno invited the audience to consider Akwa Ibom as their preferred destination. The Commissioner for Information, Comrade Ini Ememobong, noted that these collaborative efforts mark a strategic milestone in creating and strengthening international partnerships, fostering cultural and educational exchanges, and building a sense of community among Akwa Ibom citizens in the United Kingdom. The initiative showcases the state’s commitment to global collaboration and the utilization of diaspora resources for integrated development.
