Chilukuri joins the Center for New American Security

USA (Commonwealth Union)_ Vivek Chilukuri, an Indian American policy expert, has assumed a pivotal role at the Center for New American Security (CNAS), where he will serve as a senior fellow and director of the Technology and National Security Program. With a wealth of experience in government, Chilukuri previously held positions at the State Department and Capitol Hill, where he served as a senior staffer in various capacities for Senator Michael Bennet, a member of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence.

Vivek’s recent announcement on X marked the commencement of his role, and he expressed his enthusiasm for joining a highly capable team focused on exploring the implications of AI, quantum technologies, biotech, and more for US national security. He took to X and posted the following message: “Job news: After 6+ years on the Hill, I’m pleased to share that I’ve started as a Senior Fellow and Director of the Technology and National Security Program at @CNASdc. I join a whipsmart team exploring what AI, quantum, biotech, and more mean for US security. Excited to dig in.”

Richard Fontaine, the CEO of CNAS, commended Chilukuri’s impressive background as a trusted policy expert and emphasized the importance of his role in advancing CNAS’s mission to develop bipartisan policies that sustain U.S. technology leadership. During his tenure as a senior staffer for Senator Bennet, Chilukuri held diverse roles, including senior policy advisor for technology and democracy, deputy chief of staff, legislative director, and chief speechwriter. Notably, he played a pivotal role in shaping legislation aimed at bolstering America’s technology competitiveness, promoting responsible governance for digital platforms and emerging technologies like artificial intelligence, and expanding high-speed broadband access through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

Chilukuri’s professional journey also encompassed a tenure at the Department of State, where he served as a policy advisor to the undersecretary for Civilian Security, Democracy, and Human Rights. Additionally, he contributed as a program officer on the Middle East and North Africa team at the National Democratic Institute. The CNAS Technology and National Security program focuses on addressing policy challenges related to emerging technologies and strives to offer cutting-edge research on subjects such as artificial intelligence, technology strategy, biotechnology, defense technology, critical digital technology, and digital freedom. A central element of the program’s mission is to bridge the gap between the technology and policy communities, fostering a deeper understanding of these challenges and collaborating to develop effective solutions.
