Sri Lanka (Commonwealth Union)_ During the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP28) climate summit in Dubai, UAE, President Ranil Wickremesinghe of Sri Lanka engaged in discussions with Microsoft founder Bill Gates, who co-chairs the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF). The meeting aimed at fostering collaborative initiatives to address global challenges and advance Sri Lanka’s significant role in the world’s tropical belt. The President’s office reported that Gates expressed the BMGF’s commitment to supporting Sri Lanka in establishing a climate-resilient nation.

The Foundation, already involved in initiatives in Sri Lanka, pledged to strengthen its engagement, focusing on areas such as agriculture modernization, the establishment of data systems for agriculture, and the strengthening of Digital Public Infrastructure to improve Sri Lanka’s expertise in climate and adaptation. President Wickremesinghe, at COP28, presented Sri Lanka’s green initiatives and sought the BMGF’s support in advancing these sustainable initiatives. He emphasized the need for collective action to solve urgent environmental challenges, highlighting Sri Lanka’s readiness to play a productive role in global efforts.

Wickremesinghe, speaking on the sidelines of COP28, shared plans for Sri Lanka to advocate for global investment in green initiatives after the Official Creditor Committee’s finalization of the country’s debt restructuring. Additionally, the President, as well as local and global advisors, launched three ambitious projects to transform climate change-led disaster funding, often perceived as donations, into viable commercial enterprises involving private sector investments. The overarching goal is to unite nations in the Tropical Belt threatened by climate change-related disasters, collectively bargaining with advanced economies that contribute significantly to greenhouse gas emissions.
This collective effort seeks to promote more green initiatives, including renewable energy projects. Furthermore, President Wickremesinghe initiated the Climate Justice Forum (CJF), the Tropical Belt Initiative (TBI), and called for international support in establishing the International Climate Change University in Sri Lanka. These initiatives underscore Sri Lanka’s commitment to sustainable development and its proactive role in addressing global climate challenges.
