Tired all the time?

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), also known as myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME), is a complex and debilitating illness, characterized by persistent and unexplained fatigue which is not eased by rest. The signs and symptoms of CFS vary among people, and the exact cause of the syndrome remains uncertain.

Women are affected more from CFS

Anyone can get ME/CFS. While most common is, people between the age of 40 and 60 years old, the sickness also affects children, adolescents, and adults of all ages. From adults, women are affected more than men. White people are diagnosed more than other races and ethnicities. But many individuals with ME/CFS have not been diagnosed, especially among individuals from racial and ethnic minority groups.

Persistent fatigue is a standard symptom of CFS

The hallmark symptom of CFS is severe and persistent fatigue which lasts for at least six months and is not relieved by rest. This fatigue is often described as overwhelming and can significantly impact an individual’s ability to carry out daily activities. Unlike normal tiredness, the fatigue connected with CFS is not improved by sleep or rest.

CFS is likely to disturb your sleep pattern

Many people with CFS experience disturbances in their sleep patterns. In spite of feeling exhausted, they may have trouble falling asleep. Some people may also have a hard time to wake up, since they wake up feeling as tired as when they went to bed.

CFS might lead to brain fog

Cognitive dysfunction, mostly referred to as brain fog, is a common symptom of CFS. People may experience difficulties with concentration, memory, and mental clarity. Once routine tasks may become challenging, people may struggle to articulate their thoughts or find the right words.

Pain in the muscles and joints is seen in many cases

Muscle and joint pain are mostly reported by people with CFS. This pain spreads fast and can vary in intensity. It may be accompanied by aching, stiffness, or discomfort in the muscles and joints, similar to the symptoms which can be seen in conditions like fibromyalgia.

Chronic headache is a common observation among patients

Chronic headaches are a common symptom of CFS. These headaches can differ in intensity and may go with other symptoms such as light sensitivity (photophobia) or noise sensitivity (phonophobia).

Swollen lymph under arms

Many individuals with CFS experience a continuous sore throat and swollen lymph nodes, mostly in the neck and under the arms. These symptoms are often unrelated to any infection and can vary in severity.

Exertion in small activities

One important feature of CFS is post-exertional malaise, where even a slight physical or mental exertion can worsen symptoms and lead to a significant increase in fatigue. This can be delayed, with the full impact of exertion not felt until hours or even days later.

Reduced immunity

Some people with CFS may show signs of immune system dysfunction, such as recurrent infections or an increased susceptibility to illnesses. However, these immune system abnormalities are not consistent among all people with CFS.

Abdominal discomfort

Gastrointestinal symptoms, such as nausea, abdominal pain, and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)-like symptoms, can also be present in people with CFS. These symptoms contribute to the overall burden of the sickness.

Sensitivity to stimuli

People with CFS may become more sensitive to sensory stimuli, including light, sound, and certain odors. This heightened sensitivity can worsen symptoms and contribute to the overall impact of the condition on daily life.
