Africa (Commonwealth Union) _Nigeria’s President, Bola Tinubu, announced on Tuesday that his government plans to undertake a “massive education” initiative aimed at addressing the rising wave of kidnappings for ransom that is increasingly threatening the capital city, Abuja, and the conflict-affected northern regions of the country.
President Tinubu, who won the election last year with a promise to tackle Nigeria’s security crisis, expressed deep concern over the disturbing and ungodly nature of recent abductions. He emphasized education as the key to overcoming the challenges facing the nation, according to a statement from presidential spokesman Ajuri Ngelale.
The statement highlighted Tinubu’s belief in education as an antidote to the troubles afflicting the country, stating, “There is no weapon against poverty that is as potent as learning.” It mentioned that security agencies are swiftly addressing the current challenges, and comprehensive resources, policies, and plans will soon be implemented to launch a massive education initiative for Nigerian youths.
Despite Tinubu’s promises to address the security crisis, deadly attacks, particularly in the north, have persisted. Abuja, the capital, has recently witnessed a surge in abductions along major roads and in homes. Security forces in Nigeria are already engaged in battling jihadist rebels in the northeast, as well as armed groups responsible for mass killings and abductions in remote communities across the northwest and central regions.
The security situation has prompted residents on the outskirts of Abuja to consider relocating amid the increased threat of abductions for ransom, believed to be carried out by gunmen from volatile neighboring states.
Analysts, however, express skepticism about Tinubu’s effectiveness in addressing the security crisis. Oluwole Ojewale, a West and Central Africa researcher with the Institute for Security Studies, noted that Nigeria appears to be drifting towards a failing state, with non-state armed groups challenging state authority. Despite Tinubu’s promises, there has been no tangible improvement in the security situation so far, according to Ojewale.
