India (Commonwealth Union) _Tata Punch has regained its top-selling status, defeating Maruti Swift. India’s most popular automobile is no longer a Maruti. Tata’s mini SUV Punch has become the country’s best-selling vehicle, surpassing Maruti’s popular models such as the WagonR, Swift, and Brezza.

Tata has replaced Maruti as the country’s preferred automobile manufacturer. Tata’s mini SUV Punch has become the best-selling vehicle in India, overtaking popular models like WagonR, Swift, and Brezza, according to a report by TOI. In March 2024, Tata’s Punch sold more than Maruti’s WagonR, with 17,547 units vs 16,368. Interestingly, Hyundai’s Creta placed second with 16,458 units. This pattern persisted in April, with Punch selling 19,158 copies versus WagonR’s 17,850. Maruti’s Brezza finished third with 17,113 units. This unusual event demonstrates Punch’s persistent leadership for two months in a row, indicating a probable market change. Tata’s model now outsells Maruti, indicating shifting customer preferences.

Since the start of the current fiscal year, the Punch has had an outstanding run, prompting some to foresee the downfall of other automotive segments, especially hatchbacks. However, the common consumer’s effect is sometimes disregarded, and sales numbers eventually speak for themselves.  Maruti Suzuki began accepting orders for the Swift last month and had over 40,000 by early June.

With more than 19,000 units delivered domestically, none of Swift’s main competitors reached the top ten list, except the Baleno, which sold 12,842. The Swift saw a 12% year-on-year rise, with 17,346 units sold in May 2023. Although the Punch lost the top rank to the Swift, it still sold 11,124 copies, representing a huge 70% gain. Typically, the Swift competes with the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios, which suffered a 17% reduction year-on-year with 5,328 units sold.
