Seagnat, a system that protects the ship from incoming missiles by launching a variety of decoys to counter incoming missiles, will get electronic enhancements aboard Type 23 frigates. The Magazine Torpedo Launch Systems, a close-range, quick-response anti-submarine armament system that fires torpedoes from tubes located in the ship’s magazine, will also receive a technical update on some ships. The Maritime Equipment and Warfare (MEWT) team of Defence Equipment and Support (DE&S), the UK Ministry of Defence’s procurement division, placed the order. In addition to Type 23 updates, the contract will also upgrade Seagnat systems over the course of the following five years on Type 45 destroyers and Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA) tankers, which transport fuel, food, fresh water, ammunition, and other supplies for use by Royal Navy ships throughout the world.
