The Cittadella, perched majestically with a commanding view of the sea, has played myriad roles over the centuries, from defense and religion to administration. Its history is etched with the footprints of the Phoenicians, Romans, and countless others who traversed its ancient grounds. Although abandoned for many years, this historical gem has been meticulously restored, thanks to the support of a European initiative.
A Resplendent Icon
Cittadella, also known as ‘Citadel’ and ‘Gran Castello,’ is located on the picturesque island of Gozo, part of the Maltese archipelago. This fortified city, nestled in Ir-Rabat, the capital of Gozo, boasts a strategic location, with all roads on the island converging toward this historic heart. Covering approximately 18,000 square meters, Cittadella is a historical wonder, intertwined with legends and myths, echoing tales of times long past.
A Glimpse into History
The roots of the Citadel stretch back to the late Medieval Era, but the hill on which it stands has been inhabited since Neolithic times. Its walls, extending over 1.5 kilometers, have provided shelter to the Gozitans during marauding attacks, offering refuge behind the formidable 30-meter-high defenses.

In a testament to its significance, the Rehabilitation and Restoration of Cittadella Gozo earned the esteemed distinction of the 2022 RegioStars Awards. Also known as Castello, Cittadella houses several churches, including the 17th-century Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption.
