A Ketogenic Diet can fight cancer

Thomas Seyfried challenges conventional approaches to cancer treatment with his Metabolic Theory of Cancer, which focuses on cellular metabolism rather than genetic factors. According to Seyfried, impaired cellular respiration in cancer cells leads them to rely on glucose and fermentative energy production, making them vulnerable to dietary changes.

Seyfried suggests that treating the underlying causes of cancer, such as metabolic dysfunction, may be more effective than targeting individual genetic mutations. Cancer cells with dysfunctional mitochondria produce energy through fermentation, leading to further mutations and growth.

The study indicates that mitochondria play a significant role in cancer development, and transferring nuclei between healthy and cancerous cells supports this theory. Mitochondrial dysfunction can lead to metastasis, the spread of cancer to other parts of the body.

The fermentation process underlying cancer cell growth relies on glucose and glutamine, making them suitable targets for therapy. A calorie-restricted ketogenic diet, focusing on high fat and low carbohydrate intake, can starve cancer cells by inhibiting glucose and glutamine consumption.

Ketone bodies produced by the ketogenic diet are an alternative fuel source that cancer cells cannot effectively use. The “press-pulse” therapy, which includes ketogenic dieting, tailored drugs, and stress management, may help combat cancer.

Chronic systemic inflammation is recognized as a cancer-causing factor, and the Western diet, high in sugars and carbohydrates, is pro-inflammatory. Ancestral dietary approaches, low in carbohydrates and based on nutrient-dense whole foods, may be sustainable and anti-inflammatory.

Despite advances in metabolic therapies, the conventional standard of care, including chemotherapy and radiation, is still used in cancer treatment to maintain medical licenses. Thomas Seyfried’s metabolic approach to cancer treatment and the role of the ketogenic diet in managing cancer focuses on understanding the underlying causes of cancer and how dietary interventions can complement traditional treatments.
