Mumbai (Commonwealth Union)_ Keerthy Suresh has been named UNICEF India’s new Celebrity Advocate for child rights, adding another milestone to the actor’s career. UNICEF announced the appointment in a statement on Monday, noting that the National Award-winning star will help raise awareness about issues affecting children and adolescents, especially mental health and overall well-being. The agency said her involvement is expected to strengthen public awareness and encourage more action in support of every child across the country.

Sharing her thoughts on the new role, Suresh said she feels deeply grateful for the opportunity. She referred to children as “our greatest responsibility and greatest hope,” emphasizing that the attention and emotional support they receive in their early years affect their potential to mature into confident and successful adults. Suresh stated that she is excited to collaborate with UNICEF India to guarantee that all children, regardless of background, aptitude, or circumstance, have the opportunity to thrive. Her appointment comes as UNICEF India introduces several updates to its advocacy team. Actor Kareena Kapoor Khan, who previously served as a celebrity advocate, has now taken on a broader position as a national ambassador.

Alongside the two well-known actors, UNICEF has also announced its first group of Youth Advocates. These young leaders will champion key issues such as climate action, mental health, innovation, and girls’ participation in STEM fields. The four Youth Advocates include Madhya Pradesh’s Gauranshi Sharma, who focuses on disability inclusion and the right to play; Uttar Pradesh’s Kartik Verma, who works on climate issues and child rights; Assamese singer Nahid Afrin, who highlights mental health and early childhood needs; and Tamil Nadu’s Vinisha Umashankar, an emerging innovator known for her interest in science and technology.

UNICEF India Representative Cynthia McCaffrey welcomed Suresh to the role, praising the actor’s strong connection with audiences across the country. She said Suresh’s influence brings “a powerful and inspiring platform” to efforts aimed at reaching the most vulnerable children and young people with essential support, opportunities, and services. Suresh, who has acted in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Hindi films, will work closely with UNICEF to shine a light on the challenges children face today and to promote solutions that support their healthy growth.
Keerthy’s campaigning is consistent with the ideas she has promoted through her film choices, particularly female equality and social empowerment. The actor, noted for her lauded performances, has received numerous awards, including a National Film Award, five SIIMA Awards, and two Filmfare Awards South. She was also included in Forbes India’s 30 Under 30 list for 2021. Her upcoming release is JK Chandru’s Revolver Rita, in which she stars alongside Radhika Sarathkumar, Sunil, and Redin Kingsley.
