A special visitor to Rwanda ahead of CHOGM.

LONDON (CU)_UK Minister for the Commonwealth, Lord Ahmad of Wimbledon, will set out on a two-day visit in Rwanda on 29 April, as the East African nation prepares to host Commonwealth leaders in June. At the 26th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), which will be held in the capital city of Kigali, the United Kingdom will hand over the role of Commonwealth Chair-in-Office to Rwanda.

According to a statement issued by the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office on Wednesday (28 April), over the past three years, as the outgoing Chair-in-Office, the United Kingdom has provided £500 million in funding for over 40 projects across 6 continents, in order to create a better future for 2.4 billion citizens of the Commonwealth.

“As Commonwealth Chair-in-Office for the past three years, the UK has worked in partnership across the Commonwealth to deliver the aspirations and commitments which Leaders set out on fairness, security, sustainability and prosperity at CHOGM in 2018,” Lord Ahmad said.

He went on to highlight several initiatives launched by the UK, particularly for the empowerment of girls in several Commonwealth countries, including Rwanda.
