KAMPALA (CU)_ Currently, the Port of Mombasa is a key entry point of cargo not only for Uganda, but also to a vast hinterland of Eastern and Central Africa, including Rwanda, Tanzania, Ethiopia and Democratic Republic of Congo. Back in the late 1800s, Kenya and Uganda became a British Protectorate and the colonial government recognised a need to develop inland infrastructure in order to open up the area for effective administration, which led to the construction of the Kenya- Uganda Railway between 1895 and 1902.
