Africa (Commonwealth Union) _ Derrick Boadi Sakyi, a Ghanaian student studying in the United States at Ohio University, experienced significant repercussions when his scholarship was revoked. The decision was made in response to his engagement in making hateful attacks against the LGBT community in Ghana on Twitter. The exposure of his actions came to light after a Ghanaian LGBT activist, known as Papa Kojo, received a threatening message from Sakyi. The university and scholarship provider took swift action in response to the incident, reflecting their commitment to maintaining a safe and inclusive environment for all students. The situation underscores the importance of responsible social media use and the consequences of hate speech and threats towards marginalized communities.

Upon investigation, Papa Kojo discovered that Sakyi had recently started a PhD program in Biological Science at Ohio University, funded by a scholarship. However, it was revealed that the scholarship was designated for LGBTQIA+ community members, applicants from the Global South, first-generation students, and individuals with disabilities, creating a contradiction.

Papa Kojo promptly reported the threatening message and shared other derogatory posts made by Sakyi targeting the LGBT community in Ghana. He took the matter to the university, providing evidence of Sakyi’s online attacks. In response to the serious allegations, the university suspended Sakyi’s scholarship, pending further review.

Papa Kojo emphasized the significance of holding individuals accountable for their actions and strongly criticized homophobia. He suggested that individuals promoting hate should not be eligible for progressive funding and scholarships, and instead, they should consider seeking opportunities in countries known for their oppressive practices.

This situation has ignited a debate and highlighted the impact of online hate speech on scholarship opportunities and academic pursuits. It underscores the importance of fostering an inclusive and respectful environment within educational institutions. Addressing such issues ensures that scholarship recipients uphold the values of diversity and tolerance, promoting a safe and supportive learning community for all.
