The trans-Tasman alliance between Air New Zealand and Virgin Australia has been reinstated following approvals from the respective authorities in Australia and New Zealand. This renewed partnership has introduced a new codeshare agreement, allowing Virgin Australia passengers to book direct flights operated by Air New Zealand to major New Zealand cities including Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch, alongside Virgin Australia’s own services to Queenstown. Moreover, Velocity frequent flyer members will now have the opportunity to earn and redeem Velocity Points across the Tasman routes, with eligible passengers gaining access to lounge facilities as they travel between the two nations.

Alistair Hartley, Virgin Australia’s Chief Strategy and Transformation Officer, expressed enthusiasm about the revival of this collaboration, stating, “Australians share our love for New Zealand and its national airline, and we are eager to rekindle this partnership before the end of the year. The regulators’ endorsement reflects the significant consumer benefits the partnership will unlock, including enhanced value, increased choice, and expanded loyalty rewards for travelers crossing the Tasman.”

Hartley highlighted that the collaboration is particularly appealing to the Australian market, known for its strong appetite for travel. He added, “Whether it’s a short weekend visit to reconnect with family or a longer exploration of New Zealand’s scenic landscapes, this partnership offers greater flexibility and more options for Australians looking to experience beautiful Aotearoa.”

Mike Williams, Air New Zealand’s Chief Transformation and Partnerships Officer, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the value this partnership brings to Virgin Australia customers. “We look forward to welcoming Virgin Australia customers on board, offering them our exceptional Kiwi service, including a selection of quality New Zealand wines and our crew’s renowned Manaaki, which embodies care and hospitality,” Williams stated. The renewed partnership is anticipated to significantly enhance the travel experience for passengers, combining the strengths of both airlines and creating a seamless journey for travelers on either side of the Tasman Sea.

Under this agreement, Air New Zealand has outlined a robust schedule for its Australian routes. The airline will operate five weekly flights between Auckland and Adelaide, and three daily flights between Auckland and Brisbane. Christchurch to Brisbane will be serviced by daily flights, as will Wellington to Brisbane. Additionally, Air New Zealand will run three weekly flights between Auckland and Hobart, alongside 32 weekly flights from Auckland to Melbourne. Other routes include 11 weekly flights from Christchurch to Melbourne, daily services from Wellington to Melbourne, and daily connections from Queenstown to Melbourne. Furthermore, Air New Zealand will offer ten weekly flights from the Gold Coast to Auckland, two weekly flights from the Gold Coast to Christchurch, 34 weekly flights from Auckland to Sydney, and daily flights from Christchurch, Wellington, and Queenstown to Sydney.

Virgin Australia’s operations in New Zealand will also benefit from this agreement. The airline has scheduled nine weekly flights between Queenstown and Brisbane, ten weekly flights between Queenstown and Melbourne, and eleven weekly flights between Queenstown and Sydney.

This partnership is expected to deliver a wealth of advantages for travelers, including a wider array of flight options, improved access to loyalty programs, and enhanced in-flight experiences. The codeshare arrangement is designed to provide a seamless travel experience, with both airlines committed to offering high-quality services that cater to the diverse needs of their customers.

As the year progresses, both Air New Zealand and Virgin Australia are poised to further strengthen this partnership, with a shared goal of fostering greater connectivity between Australia and New Zealand. This alliance not only reinforces the longstanding ties between the two countries but also opens new avenues for exploration, business, and leisure travel, ensuring that passengers enjoy a comprehensive and rewarding travel experience across the Tasman.
