KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (CU)_ Malaysia has granted conditional approval for Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft, Google Cloud, and Telekom Malaysia for the development and management of hyperscale data centers and cloud services. The initiative focuses on empowering cloud computing services in the public sector of the country and fostering mass digital adoption.

Earlier, Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin had stated that in compliance with the government’s Digital Economy Blueprint or MyDigital initiative, cloud service providers (CSPs) are expected to invest between RM12 to RM15 billion (US$2.96-US$3.70 billion) in the next five years. The Prime Minister stated that by the end of 2022, the government also plans to transfer 80 per cent of public data to hybrid cloud systems, as an initiative to empower public sector cloud computing services through its ‘Cloud First’ strategy.

The PM said: “In addition, for a more effective and smooth data collection and management, this strategy also helps to reduce government costs in information technology management in the long run. All these cloud services will allow big data, artificial intelligence (AI), Internet of things (IoT) and other applications to be utilized to enhance and strengthen government services.”

Three local Information and Communications Technology (ICT) companies, including Enfrasys Solutions, Prestariang Systems, and Cloud Connect, have been nominated by the government as managed service providers (MSPs) to operate with the CSPs to render their services to public sector agencies.

Muhyiddin said: “For a more effective and smooth data collection and management, this strategy also helps to reduce government costs in information technology management in the long run. All these cloud services will allow big data, artificial intelligence, Internet of Things and other applications to be utilized to enhance and strengthen government services.”
