An alarming Covid rise in India!

Mumbai, India (CU)_ According to the World Health Organization’s epidemiological update on Covid-19 (WHO), in the last week of June, India recorded a 25 percent increase in new Covid-19 cases and a 53 percent increase in coronavirus-related mortality. According to a report from WHO, after recording a downward trend in new cases since mid-January 2022, the South-East Asia Region has recorded a rise over the past four weeks, reporting more than 131,000 new cases, which is a 32% spike from the previous week.

According to the international health organization, in the last week of June, India recorded the greatest number of new cases in the South-East Asia region. Accordingly, India registered 93,281 new cases, which equates to an average of 6.8 new cases per 100,000, showing a 25 percent increase. According to the WHO, India also reported the largest number of new fatalities in the South-East Asia region. Compared to the previous week, 144 more fatalities were reported in India, which is a 53 percent rise.

According to the region’s updated report, the data from eight of the ten nations (80%) indicated a surge in the count of new cases of 20% or more, with Bangladesh, the Maldives, and Sri Lanka showing some of the most substantial proportionate increases. In addition, it was reported that the number of new weekly deaths in the region climbed by 15% as compared to the previous week, which recorded more than 300 new deaths.

Concerned about the emergence of Covid, Dr. Poonam Khetrapal Singh, WHO (South-East Asia), urged these nations to expedite Covid-19 immunization coverage.
