Anu Nakka scripts history as Milpitas’ first Indian-American elected to public office

-

(Commonwealth Union)_ Anu Nakka has been elected to the Board of Education of the Milpitas Unified School District (MUSD). Accordingly, she becomes the first Indian-American elected to public office in the history of Milpitas. During a media interview, Nakka stated that she did not expect so much support. However, she believes that it’s time for a change and that the time has arrived for collaboration and partnership.

Nakka was naturally interested in education as a youngster, eager to learn new things and develop in whatever manner possible. She was constantly involved in extracurricular activities and enjoyed studying other languages. She also learned traditional folk dances in addition to her regular studies. Nakka’s passion for education grew with her age. She has served on many PTAs and has been actively engaged in assisting her kids’ schools in every manner possible. Her youngest daughter is a Rancho Middle School eighth-grader, and her eldest daughter is a Milpitas High School senior.

In 2001, when Nakka migrated to Milpitas from India to stay with her husband, she never imagined or expected the life she presently leads. “I never expected I would reach what I am today. When I came to this country, I didn’t know how much potential and how many resources would be offered to us. It’s a huge deal, and it feels very rewarding,” she said. Despite being a newbie to the Milpitas political scene, Nakka was able to garner the backing of a number of elected politicians and community leaders. When questioned about what contributed to her ability to garner support and finally win the election, she responded with three crucial phrases: “Walk, knock, and talk.” She also noted that speaking with individuals personally had a tremendous influence on her campaign and that it’s all about connecting with people.

Next month, Nakka will be officially sworn in, and she hopes to start her services from day one. She is aware that it is a complete learning process. “I want to listen and learn before anything else,” she noted. Expressing her gratitude to the voters, she said: “I would like to thank everyone who has believed in me, trusted in my initiatives, and been out there supporting and walking. I was amazed by all of the volunteers and Milpitains. A huge shout-out and thank you to all of them.” She added: “This country has given me a lot. And it’s never too late for anybody. If you want to do something, to give your bit of contribution, it’s never too late.”
