India (Commonwealth Union)_ The presence of German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier at one of Europe’s biggest Hindu temples, the Sri Kamadchi Ampal Temple in Hamm, for its annual chariot festival was a watershed moment in the history of the Indian diaspora and a testament to the growing influence of its culture across the world. His presence was an indication of the growing acceptance of Indian traditions and the important role played by the Indian and Tamil diaspora in building multicultural societies. The German President was the chief guest at the temple’s annual celebrations in July, accompanied by State Minister Verena Schäfer. The visit was a historic milestone for the temple as it was the first time a German President had accepted an invitation to attend the festival, despite several years of requests made by the temple’s management. The visit was an indication of how Indian religious and cultural traditions are now being widely accepted and respected outside India.

As the President arrived at the temple, he received a warm traditional welcome from devotees. He was greeted with flower garlands, a tilak on his forehead and an aarti ceremony before entering the temple complex. Thousands attended the ceremony and cheered as the German leader joined in the celebrations. The invitation came after years of lobbying by the temple’s chief priest, Shiva Sri Arumugam Bhaskarakurukkal. Despite repeated declines from the President’s office in previous years, the priest continued sending invitations, believing that one day they would be accepted. This year, that determination paid off as President Steinmeier attended the event and offered prayers to Goddess Kamadchi.
Addressing devotees at the temple’s community centre, the German President praised the contribution of the Hindu and Tamil communities to German society. He said Germany is becoming an increasingly multi-religious nation where different faiths coexist peacefully. He also reaffirmed the country’s commitment to protecting religious freedom and supporting cultural diversity. During his speech, Steinmeier also acknowledged the journey of many Tamils who fled Sri Lanka’s civil war and rebuilt their lives in Germany. He recognised their efforts in preserving their traditions while contributing positively to German society.

The colourful festival closely resembles traditional temple festivals held in Tamil Nadu, featuring religious rituals, music, cultural programmes and the grand chariot procession, the highlight of the annual event.
President Steinmeier stayed at the temple until the start of the chariot procession, meeting devotees and learning about the temple’s history and significance. His visit was also historic for the city of Hamm, as it was only the fourth official visit by a German President since 1949. Beyond the celebrations, the visit represented the growing global influence of Indian culture. It showed how traditions that originated in India continue to thrive across the world, drawing not just millions of devotees but also the attention and respect of world leaders. For many members of the Indian and Tamil diaspora, the President’s presence was seen as a recognition of their cultural heritage and their lasting contribution to the diverse social fabric of Germany.
