Australia Tightens Visa Rules

In a move to revamp its migration system, Australia announced on Monday a significant tightening of visa rules targeting international students and low-skilled workers. The government anticipates that these measures could result in a 50% reduction in migrant intake over the next two years. The decision follows a peak in net immigration at a record 510,000 in 2022-23, with official projections indicating a decline to approximately 250,000 in 2024-25 and 2025-26, aligning with pre-COVID levels.

Home Affairs Minister Clare O’Neil stated that the government has diligently worked to strike a balance in Australia’s migration system. The ongoing targeted reforms are already exerting downward pressure on net overseas migration, with the expectation of further contributing to the anticipated decline.

The surge in net overseas migration in 2022-23 was predominantly attributed to international students. In response, Australia, which temporarily increased its annual migration numbers last year due to the pandemic’s impact on border controls, is now taking steps to address what Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described as a “broken” system.

Recognizing the need for a more sustainable approach, the government is implementing new policies affecting international students. These include heightened English test score requirements and the cessation of provisions allowing students to extend their stay in the country. Moreover, a specialized visa tailored for highly skilled workers is being introduced, featuring an expedited one-week processing time. This initiative aims to assist businesses in swiftly recruiting top-tier talent amid stiff competition with other developed economies.

Australia, traditionally dependent on immigration to address labor market demands, is navigating these changes under the Labor government’s leadership. The government seeks to accelerate the entry of highly skilled workers and streamline their path to permanent residency, aligning with its overarching objective of achieving a more efficient and balanced migration system.
