Australia (Commonwealth)_

A recent report from the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), Australia’s national science agency, has forecast a transformative future for the country’s hydrogen electrolyser manufacturing (HEM) industry. According to the report, the sector has the potential to generate $1.7 billion in revenue and create approximately 4,000 jobs by 2050. This projection underscores the strategic importance of hydrogen electrolysers in advancing Australia’s position in the global renewable energy transition.

The Hydrogen Electrolyser Manufacturing report outlines the critical role of devices that use electricity to extract hydrogen from water and establish a sustainable energy source.  The document highlights an opportunity for Australia to become a major contributor to renewable hydrogen production worldwide. With a burgeoning local electrolyser manufacturing industry and a robust pipeline of projects targeting renewable hydrogen, Australia is well-positioned to capitalize on this growing market.

Australia’s advantages include an emerging network of manufacturers leveraging cutting-edge innovations from its research institutions. The country’s strong foundation and strategic push for renewable energy initiatives position it to lead in hydrogen technology. However, the report warns that immediate action is necessary to secure this competitive edge.

Vivek Srinivasan, Energy Lead at CSIRO Futures, emphasized the broader implications of establishing a domestic electrolyser manufacturing industry.

“Developing an electrolyser manufacturing sector is not merely about addressing current market demand,” Mr. Srinivasan explained. “It represents a chance to create a long-lasting industry that strengthens the national economy and enhances energy security by fostering sovereign manufacturing capabilities.”

He further noted that by combining Australia’s renewable energy potential with its research and development strengths, the nation could stake its claim in a rapidly growing global market. However, this opportunity demands swift and decisive action to maximize its potential.

Recommendations for Realizing Australia’s Potential

The CSIRO report stresses the need for a collaborative approach involving government, industry stakeholders, and research institutions. To fully unlock the potential of the HEM sector, the report proposes three key strategies:

  1. Aggregated Demand: Align the HEM industry with complementary clean energy manufacturing initiatives to streamline strategic investment and decision-making processes.
  2. Sovereign Capabilities and International Partnerships: Foster international collaborations that ensure the retention of value within Australia while tapping into global expertise.
  3. Strategic Manufacturing Hubs: Identify and develop manufacturing hubs that utilize Australia’s abundant renewable electricity resources. These hubs would also need to address structural challenges such as labor and logistics costs.

In addition to manufacturing, the report identifies significant opportunities in related services. By 2050, the installation and maintenance of hydrogen electrolysers are expected to contribute an additional $1.2 billion in revenue and support 1,000 new jobs.

A Global Market Window

Dr. Patrick Hartley, Leader of CSIRO’s Hydrogen Industry Mission, highlighted the critical timing required to secure a share of the global electrolyser market.

“Australia has a substantial pipeline of renewable hydrogen projects, each with specific needs for electrolyser procurement and ongoing maintenance,” Dr. Hartley remarked.

He pointed out that leveraging the nation’s geographical and technical advantages could enable the development of an integrated supply chain. By doing so, Australia could enjoy the economic benefits and environmental impact of dominating a significant share of the electrolyser market.

Path to a Renewable Future

The CSIRO report provides a roadmap for Australia to position itself as a leader in clean energy manufacturing. Through targeted investments, strategic partnerships, and leveraging natural advantages, Australia has the potential to significantly impact the global transition to renewable energy.

The hydrogen electrolyser industry represents more than an economic opportunity; it is a pathway to a sustainable energy future. With timely action and a unified national strategy, Australia can realize this vision, ensuring both environmental and economic dividends for decades to come.

The full report delves into Australia’s prospects in hydrogen electrolyser manufacturing and offers insights into related clean technology industries. For further details, industry experts and stakeholders are encouraged to engage with the report and explore avenues for collaboration.
