Bangladesh (Commonwealth Union)_ Bangladesh and the United Kingdom have reached a mutual consensus to enhance bilateral trade, business collaboration, and investments for their mutual advantages. This agreement was solidified during a meeting between the British High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Sarah Cooke, and the Prime Minister’s Principal Secretary, Md Tofazzel Hossain Miah, held at the latter’s office. Accordingly, the Chief Economist of the Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office is anticipated to pay a visit to Bangladesh next month to further address this matter. This detail was confirmed by the PM’s Assistant Press Secretary Emrul Kayas.
During the one-hour meeting, both parties acknowledged the potential to expand their economic partnership for mutual benefit. The British envoy, Sarah Cooke, offered her assurance to Tofazzel Hossain of collaboration aimed at facilitating quota-free access for Bangladeshi products to the British market, especially following Bangladesh’s transition from a least developed nation to a developing nation. The discussion extended to addressing the Rohingya issue, with Cooke expressing the view that a sustainable resolution involves the repatriation of Rohingyas to their homeland in Myanmar. She applauded the continuous efforts of the Bangladesh government in conducting safe, dignified, and durable repatriation processes for the Rohingya population.
Reflecting on the historical foundation of the Bangladesh-UK relationship laid during the tenure of the Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Tofazzel emphasized that this relationship has evolved into a strategic partnership, poised for further consolidation in the future. The meeting also encompassed the theme of crime committed by migrants and underscored a joint interest in curbing illegal migration. Further, deliberations also extended to climate and energy issues, as both parties explored avenues for collaborative action in these critical domains.
