Dhaka, Bangladesh (CU)_ The video of the Bangladesh ferry accident is doing viral rounds on social media. It features a huge marine vessel shoving and drowning a tiny ferry. According to reports, the terrific accident killed nearly six people in the boat and over 100 are missing following the drastic collision between the ferry carrying passengers and the cargo freighter on Sunday.
The incident occurred on the Shitalakshya River in the capital Dhaka between the inland cargo carrier MV Ruposhi-9 and the inland cargo carrier MV Afsaruddin. The video features the larger vessel pusing the little ferry for a short distance until it tilts and then sinks completely. Some passengers are seen leaping from the ship in an attempt to save their lives.
The commercial vessel comes to a halt, but not before the boat is fully submerged. The footage was shot by passengers on a nearby ferry. They can be heard panicking as the cargo vessel collides with the ferry. The video was shared on several social media platforms and garnered huge attention from the public. It received over 25,000 views on Reddit. Some people were taken aback while viewing the complete video. Others discussed escape measures and precautions and which direction to swim in the event of such a terrific situation.
One user commented, “Hard to watch those who jumped off the side only to be sucked under the ship”. Another user remarked, “My biggest fear.” Several users shared strategies to increase one’s chances of surviving in the event of such a catastrophe. One user advised, “Jump early and swim as fast as possible perpendicular to the ships”.
On Sunday, authorities revealed that they have recovered five bodies, including a man, three women, and a kid. According to the reports, there were more than 60 people in the boat, and police inspector Aslam Mia told the media that 22 of them had safely reached the shore.
