London, UK (CWBN)_ Following every other major media organisation’s path, the BBC plans to restructure its television division to go digital in a broader manner with plans, as stated by chief content office Charlotte Moore. This will be facilitated via the BBC’s established digital service iPlayer. The iPlayer-focused strategy, coupled with the scraping of existing Channel controller positions, hopes to enable genre chiefs.

By doing so, the BBC plans to relax their focus on which channel the shows are on, and instead focus on the potential shows and their content. The BBC went on to state that iPlayer will bring all programming into one place and offer a “richer” experience for audiences. The corporation promises that the channels BBC One, BBC Two and BBC Four will stay “at the top of their game” as distinctive channel brands.

The BBC iPlayer already features content from BBC channels, so it’s still unclear exactly how it will be expanded in the new model. The restructure is set to take effect in April 2021, according to the BBC’s chief content officer. Until April 2021, the while existing channel controller roles for BBC One, BBC Two and the BBC Four Editor posts will continue, however, the upon the introduction of the new model in April 2021; the seats will be made redundant.

The BBC says the more straightforward, more streamlined system will “create greater flexibility to deliver world-beating, distinctive programs”.

Under the new plan, the BBC’s genre controllers will move into director roles and will see Patrick Holland, Shane Allen, Rose Garnett, Kate Phillips and Piers Wenger all become directors of their respective genres. Dan McGolpin will reprise the newly formed position as director of BBC iPlayer and channels. All six directors will be reporting to Moore.
