Belize City, Belize — September 10, 2026: The situation with electricity supply in the wonderful Caribbean nation Belize has grown increasingly complex. Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) informed its clients on September 9, 2026, that some parts of the country might face blackouts in the near future due to steadily increasing demand that exceeds supply.
As per BEL, the anticipated commencing time for the power cuts is from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on September 9, thus affecting such important locations as the George Price Highway, Ladyville, San Ignacio, Dangriga, Independence, and Belize City. The next stage of cuts was expected to occur from 9 p.m. to 11:59 p.m. and involve several towns, including Corozal, San Ignacio, Dangriga, and Punta Gorda. The electricity company adjusted the timetable in line with changes in the demand and supply situation.
The signal was something more than just a common notification of outage. Belize’s network of electricity has started passing through the process of widening the gap between what is required and what is produced by local sources. According to the report of the Belize Electricity Limited on 1 September 2026, the electricity generated in the country amounted to 103 megawatts with respect to the evening demand that was 122 megawatts on 25 August. Moreover, the generation of electricity achieved 109 megawatts on 31 August, contrary to the demand that reached 117 megawatts.
BEL has commented that there are chances that the controlled load shedding should be put into practice to avoid the situation when the government will not be able to meet the demand for electricity.
Nonetheless, there could be a turning point in sight. BEL stated that the emergency temporary generation capacity installed at its facility in Westlake is projected to be operational by the middle of September 2026 and could provide additional support during the times of peak demand or in case another source of supply fails.
Belizeans are getting the message: the next blackout could signal an electricity supply system with little room for error.
