Belize’s Tourism Surge: Why Canadians Are Investing in Eco Travel, Second Homes & Caribbean Lifestyles

Whilst precise figures on 2nd-home ownership may be limited, tourism data consistently reflect that Canadians remain a steady & growing segment of visitors to Belize, which is drawn by protected marine & terrestrial ecosystems.

From the Belize Barrier Reef to expansive rainforests & culturally rich communities, Belize’s natural assets continue to shape its appeal not only as a visit destination for vacations but also increasingly as a lifestyle choice.

Acknowledging that growing interest, Belize’s Minister of Tourism & Diaspora Affairs, Anthony Mahler, emphasised that Belize welcomes visitors who value & respect these preserved environments. Mahler further reinforced Belize’s long-standing commitment to sustainable tourism.

Mahler added that Belize has always been an attractive destination for the Canadian market. Belize has expanded its airlift. This expansion included a new flight that began this year from Montreal, which connects Belize to Europe on the same day.

In December ’25, Air Canada launched its inaugural flight from Montreal to Belize. It established the first direct air link between Montreal, Quebec, and Belize. The new route complements the airline’s existing same-day connection from Toronto.

Belize’s status as the only English-speaking country in Central America further strengthens accessibility. Mahler added that this factor makes Belize especially appealing to Canadian travellers.

Mahler emphasised the critical role of Belize’s diaspora in shaping both tourism and national identity. He also noted that Belizeans resident overseas, including those in Canada, remain deeply connected to their homeland.

All are an integral part of our development. That’s the reason the Belize Prime Minister had foresight in seeing the need for a diaspora unit, added Mahler, to ensure that the voices and contributions of Belizeans abroad are recognised and integrated into national development efforts. We maintain constant dialogue with people around the world. Belize has about 400,000 people residing in the country. Besides these figures, a 1st generation is estimated at 350,000 to 450,000 residents outside Belize. If considering both 2nd & 3rd generations, there may be about 750,000 in total, asserted Mahler.

Mahler opined that this connection translated into powerful organic promotion through personal networks, which no formal campaign could replicate, particularly in the context of the large Belizean diaspora that actively engages in community-building and cultural exchange.
