Official in Windsor, Ontario, celebrated next week’s intended opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge. It was at a Canada-only ribbon-cutting ceremony on the Canadian side of the structure.
Representatives from the Canadian government, the government of Ontario, the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority, and Bridging North America, besides members of the Howe family, gathered on Friday, 24 July ’26, to officially inaugurate the bridge.
The cable-stayed bridge that connects Windsor, Ontario, with Detroit, Michigan, is named after the Canadian hockey legend. It’s scheduled to open as early as noon on Monday. 27 July, said the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority (WDBA).
A Canadian official said that no Americans were in attendance on Friday, 24 July, after the cancellation of a joint event between Canada & the U.S. The cancellation is a move that came in light of trade action threatened by the United States (U.S.).
Earlier last week, the U.S. president, Donald Trump, shared intentions to impose 50% tariffs on a wide range of Canadian goods. As Friday, 24 July’s event was underway, Trump posted online that the U.S. had been disinvited from the ceremony.
U.S. officials hadn’t confirmed Monday’s expected bridge opening. There has been no announcement of a ceremony on the American side.
1345hrs: ‘The systems are all go here’
Canada’s minister of housing & infrastructure, Gregor Robertson, said that it’s his understanding that the Gordie Howe Bridge may still open on Monday, 27 July. However, the U.S. has not yet confirmed the opening date for its side of the border.
Robertson said they were eager for the systems to be fully operational on the Canadian side, and they know the U.S. side is similar.
There’s a new agreement in principle that sets that course for the Monday, 27 July opening. What’s expected is to respect that in good faith as well as get this bridge open for Canada & the US, besides Windsor & Detroit.
