The research, which was conducted in the United Kingdom, discovered that children who get involved in more physical activity tended to experience less emotional and behavioral issues and less depressed symptoms.

Adolescence is a frequent period for the beginning of depression, this is one of the most widespread mental illness. It is a mood illness marked by a lack of interest or pleasure in most activities and lasting emotions of despair and pessimism. According to statistics, it has been rising in recent years.

Especially during lockdowns, caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, young individuals mental health issues worsened since they couldn’t go outside for some fresh air or socialize with peers.

Depression that shows early in adolescence may have more difficult consequences than depression that does so later in life. According to other studies, low physical activity has been connected to depression in adults.

Due to this, therapeutic programs aim to reduce symptoms of depression and other mental disorders by engaging people suffering from those disorders in physical activity.

Researcher Josephine N. Booth and her colleagues wanted to find out, if there was a connection between mental health and physical activity in children. Observing children who took part in the ALSPAC or Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children. The investigation, finally published their results in the Journal Mental Health and Exercise.

Actigraph accelerometer is a wearable gadget which tracks and measures movements and their levels of physical activity.

Continuously for seven days participants had to wear it on the right hip during the day. The Short Mood and Feeling Questionnaire (SMFQ) measured depressive symptoms, and the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) was used to estimate general emotional and behavioral issues. Data from 4,755 individuals, including 2,627 women, were available for these studies.

This happened because not all research participants’ children showed up for data collection at the clinic when asked or agreed to wear the actigraph. However, the researchers only revealed minor differences in the qualities of the children who gave the study’s data and those who did not.

Both boys and girls between the ages of 11 and 13, there was a small association between reduction in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity and increases in depressive symptoms.

A child spending few moments outside, or going on a brisk walk, can encourage exercise later in life. Science has concluded that walking daily and engaging in physical exercise will lead to many benefits in the future. By encouraging children to start when they are young will lead to less depression and less concern for mental health disruptions.
