Biden Cabinet Nominee: Strong Stance on China but ‘Not Unilaterally’

-

It is reported that many of Chinas policies adopted during the Trump administration will remain in President Biden’s cabinet but with different methodologies that await further explanation.

Yellen: Ready for Battle in a Multilateral Way

Janet Yellen, the nominee for Treasury secretary, said during Tuesday’s confirmation hearings for Biden’s Cabinet, made it clear that the U.S. will “use a full array of tools” to address issues raised about China’s trade practices.

On the other hand, Yellen said the Biden administration will cooperate with U.S. allies “rather than unilaterally” in approaching its stance on what she refers to as the country’s “most important strategic competitor.”

Trump single handedly imposed tariffs on Chinese goods worth billions of dollars, which brought on a U.S. – China trade war-fare thus resulting China imposing tariffs on U.S goods.

No further details were provided by Ms. Reddy on how the Biden team will tackle the issues reflecting on comments made by President-elect Biden that had no urgency on changing the current position with regards the tariff on Chinese products.

Blinken: Firm but Focused on U.S. Strength

Mr. Antony Blinken, President Biden’s nominee for the position of U.S Secretary of State testified during the confirmation hearings, hinting at an approach towards China and other military rivals that will evolve.

Blinken while acknowledging the “growing rivalry from China and Russia summed up that he is in agreement with the hardline stance by the Trump Administration on these foreign competitors.

On the other hand, Blinken said some of Trump’s approaches in facing the challenge of a strengthening and economically rising China were wrong. “We have to start by approaching China from a position of strength.

Blinken was of the opinion that some Trumps approaches in confronting challenges of Chinas strengthened rising economy were wrong.  “We have to start by approaching China from a position of strength.

In the eyes of Blinken,  the U.S should make sure that it can stand up to all possible challenges and “any aggression” in the future  and this for they should  concentrate on  expanding more power in terms of military investments.

Concerns on How Biden will Ease Tensions

With hours before Joe Biden is sworn in as the 46th President of the United States, worries have been put forward about Trumps recent behavior and how best the Biden administration plans on handling the tensions brought on by the previous government.

It is reported by some Analysts, that in a valiant manner to corner Joe Biden, Trumps last-ditch move was that he banned the importation of Chinese cotton and tomatoes from Xinjiang and an announcement made to all suppliers selling Huawei products, the licenses will be revoked.  Assistant research fellow at the China Institute of International Studies, Zhang Tengjun, said Trump’s latest actions on China-U.S. relations could “restrain the Biden administration.

Business entities have conveyed the adversities faced by them due to the current tariffs. This being said, since the first round of tariffs were imposed Trumps approach   towards U.S.-China policy has been queried many times. It is also said that the policy was made public on Twitter with no details.

Once in office, President Biden, while making sure that that the U.S leadership is retained, has the hard work of trying to ease the tensions.
