Blood pressure medication in evening no better than morning

-

UK- Hypertension is usually impacted by a variety of factors such as smoking, obesity, stress, diet especially with foods high in salt and the lack of exercise. Timing is generally a significant factor in the administration of many medications. However, a study conducted by the University College London saw no particular significance in time for individuals to take blood pressure medication. The study was significant and known as the TIME trial with over 21,000 patients in a period exceeding 5 years.

The results are likely to ease concerns of hypertension medications users concerned over the timing, as quite often in the rush of the morning, medications can be forgotten.

Backing for the study came from the British and Irish Hypertension Society, the National Institute for Health Research in the UK, and funded by the British Heart Foundation.

Professor Thomas MacDonald lead researcher of the University of Dundee stated that the study indicated heart attack, stroke and vascular death occurred to a similar extent irrespective of time. He further stated that people with high blood pressure can administer themselves with their regular antihypertensive medications at a time of day at their convenience.

The trial was conducted for adults on at least a single hypertension medication and a functioning email, who were signed up with an advertisement in the community and from the databases of consented patients in Britain.

The participants were separated into 2 groups, those who took their medication in the morning versus those who take their medication in the evening, where the participants who developed non-fatal heart attack or non-fatal stroke, vascular death and went to hospital were analyzed. The results indicated that 1 of these conditions occurred in 3.4% of participants from the  evening medication group and in 3.7% of participants in the morning medication group. These results make it quite certain that there is no significant difference in the hypertension medication time.
