Fluency in a second language for some jobs is a substantial advantage, for some it is a requirement, this quality is a plus point in the eyes of many recruiters, even if it doesn’t seem to have an obvious connection to the position applied for. Languages no doubt make an individual more employable as it demonstrates the applicant’s capacity for learning.

Bilingual is an individual who is able to speak in two languages fluently, maintaining a conversation in either language without difficulty. If an individual is multilingual, he possesses the ability and is fluent in several languages, attaining a greater edge in the graduate job hunt.

With reference to the most recent study from a lobbying organization CBI, representing many British businesses, French, German, Spanish, Chinese and Arabic are the languages most employers seek.

Jointly published with an education company Pearson the CBI/Pearson Education and Skills report, commented that Spanish with a growing demand, reflects its use in both Latin America and Europe.

Individuals who are able to speak more than one language find it easier to develop certain skills such as, communication, multitasking, problem solving, creativity and originality, culture understanding and awareness.

Many universities and colleges offer opportunities for individuals who wish to study language at a basic level, with after hour classes for adult learners.

As with everything from managing an international hedge fund to eating and sleeping, apps for language learning are available. However, some require a subscription fee, generally ranging from £5–£10 per month. These Apps may include Duolingo, Memrise, Busuu and Rosetta Stone.

It is a documented fact that the most effective and fastest way to absorb a language is to converse with native speakers. Practicing the language as a daily routine is essential as it helps to adapt to the individual’s lifestyle. However, it needs to be a constant learning process.

Certain languages are highly values in specific industries, an individual may be required to write and speak in a second language as well as in English, for example, working for M15, the security service as a foreign language analysis. Some of the sectors that bilingualism is highly demanded are Tourism and Hospitality, Government, Social work, Education, International Development, Police force and finance.
