United Kingdom (Commonwealth Union)_ In a practical move towards addressing a persistent environmental fear, the government of the United Kingdom has engaged steps to address the mushrooming sargassum seaweed problem touching the Caribbean region. In recent years, the sargassum seaweed has developed a substantial hazard to the Caribbean’s marine life, endangering its rich marine ecosystems. Reports claim that the determined seaweed incursion has started to put pressure on the region’s economy and carry possible risks to public health.
Accordingly, environmentalists and scientists from across the province will be appearing in a discussion to address the prevalence and administration of the sargassum seaweed. Political and business influential will also appear the gathering. A crucial factor of the conference will be an assessment of the present research and exercise in other countries where diverse varieties of seaweed are collected for commercial applications. Additionally, a debate will also be held on the transferability and or significance of present best practices to sargassum in the Caribbean.
The two-day discussion is co-sponsored by the government of Virgin Unite and BVI with Britain’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office, the Caribbean Council, and the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS). Foremost scientists will also be requested to appraise the latest facts of the experiential phenomena, project possible tendencies over the next two to five years, and develop an understanding of the reasons associated with sargassum occurrence.
Sargassum, which gets its term from the Portuguese word for grape, is a floating brownish algae that normally blooms in the Sargasso Sea, a three million-square-kilometer frame of warm water in the north Atlantic that is a chief habitat and nursery for many marine species. Reacting to the plea from Caribbean leaders, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s government has put forth an invite. The UK government has also reserved a considerable fund of up to £300,000 (USD$374,000) for this enterprise, with a proposal deadline of October 10.
