(Commonwealth) _ Carlsberg Marston’s Brewing Company (CMBC) has recently unveiled its ambitious plans to invest approximately £10 million in upgrading its Northampton brewery. The primary objective of this investment is to bolster sustainability efforts by enhancing its glue dot packaging solution known as Snap Pack, reducing water usage, and upgrading canning facilities. These crucial upgrades are scheduled to go live within the first three months of 2024, marking a significant stride towards CMBC’s commitment to environmental responsibility. The Snap Pack, which was introduced in 2018, represents a groundbreaking innovation in the beverage industry. It was developed with the aim of eliminating plastic rings traditionally used in multi-can packaging, which often contribute to plastic pollution and harm to marine life. Over the years, CMBC has gradually integrated the glue dot solution into its production processes, with the company reporting that, in 2022, Snap Pack technology was employed for an impressive 65% of the four- and six-can multipacks produced at the Northampton brewery.

One of the major highlights of this substantial investment is the introduction of a new Snap Pack machine, which is expected to double the number of Snap Pack multipacks that can be produced. The ultimate goal is to fully transition to Snap Pack technology by the end of 2024. By doing so, CMBC is aligning itself with the global trend towards reducing single-use plastics and promoting sustainability in the beverage packaging industry. CMBC’s CEO, Paul Davies, expressed the company’s dedication to environmental responsibility, stating, “We take our responsibility as a brewer very seriously, and ensuring we reduce our impact on the planet is a hugely important part of this.” He emphasized the significance of this £10 million investment in Northampton, which serves as a tangible demonstration of CMBC’s commitment to eliminating packaging waste, reducing water waste, and improving operational efficiency at its breweries.

The Snap Pack represents a pioneering solution in the beverage industry, aiming to eradicate the use of plastic rings for multi-can packaging. CMBC’s investment seeks to expand the utilization of this sustainable packaging technology. By replacing plastic rings with glue dot technology, CMBC is actively contributing to reducing plastic waste and minimizing its environmental impact. The introduction of a new Snap Pack machine is set to significantly increase the production capacity for Snap Pack multipacks, allowing for a broader adoption of this eco-friendly packaging. Alongside packaging improvements, CMBC’s investment also focuses on reducing water usage, which is crucial for minimizing the environmental footprint of brewery operations. CMBC’s CEO, Paul Davies, emphasized the company’s strong commitment to sustainability and the environment, highlighting the importance of taking ambitious steps now to achieve their sustainability goals.

This investment by CMBC underscores the increasing importance of sustainability and environmental responsibility within the brewing industry. As consumers become more eco-conscious, companies like CMBC are taking proactive measures to align their operations with these values and reduce their environmental impact. CMBC’s initiative can serve as an inspiration to other beverage companies and industries to invest in sustainable practices, reduce plastic waste, and drive positive change in a world where environmental concerns are paramount. With their £10 million investment, CMBC is not only transforming their production processes but also helping to shape a more sustainable future for the brewing industry. Carlsberg Marston’s Brewing Company’s significant investment in sustainability upgrades is a testament to its dedication to environmental responsibility and reducing its impact on the planet. The transition to the innovative Snap Pack technology, coupled with reduced water usage and enhanced efficiency, represents a commendable effort to lead the way in the brewing industry’s sustainable future. CMBC’s commitment to these initiatives is a reflection of the growing importance of sustainability and environmental consciousness in today’s world.
