Ukraine has agreed to a 30-day ceasefire proposed by the United States following extensive peace talks in Saudi Arabia. The negotiations, held in Jeddah, marked a pivotal moment in efforts to de-escalate the conflict between Ukraine and Russia. US officials now seek to convince Russia to accept the terms and disengage along the front line.
The agreement represents a shift in strategy after tensions between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and US President Donald Trump. A previous dispute in the Oval Office had strained relations, but Tuesday’s discussions resulted in a renewed commitment to finding a diplomatic resolution. The United States confirmed that, alongside the ceasefire, it would resume intelligence sharing and security assistance to Ukraine, which had been paused recently.
The next step was to secure Russian approval. He stated that Russia now had an opportunity to engage in diplomacy and determine whether it was willing to end hostilities.
A joint statement from the US and Ukraine outlined the details of the ceasefire, which would cover all military engagements on land, at sea, and in the air. The Ukrainian government had initially pushed for a more limited truce but ultimately agreed to an expanded version. The statement also confirmed that the two sides would appoint negotiating teams to pursue a long-term resolution.
Following the announcement, Trump conveyed his intentions of reaching out to Russian President Vladimir Putin in hopes of securing Russia’s participation in the ceasefire. He acknowledged that both sides needed to agree for the plan to succeed. European leaders welcomed the development, with several governments viewing it as a step toward a broader peace agreement.
While the ceasefire talks unfolded, the war continued on the ground. Moscow reported that its capital had experienced one of the largest drone attacks since the beginning of the conflict, with Russian officials stating that they have intercepted over 300 aerial threats. Meanwhile, Ukraine’s military reported multiple Russian drone strikes across key regions, underscoring the urgency of a truce.
As both sides consider their next steps, the US and Ukraine have also agreed to finalize a critical rare minerals deal that could have long-term economic implications. The agreement is expected to strengthen Ukraine’s economy while securing future US support for its security.
