England (Commonwealth Union)_During a British-Bangladeshi award event, a resident from Chadderton, Oldham, Greater Manchester received a coveted honor. Amin Barbor Chowdhury, who resides in Chadderton and is a community champion received an award at the thirteenth annual ‘Who’s Who Awards’ in recognition of his contributions to the society. The event is intended to honor the British-Bangladeshi community, and the publishers of the Sylhet and Bangla Mirror hosted the event.

On receiving the honor, Chowhury said: “I have always been aware that I am a role model, and to etch a place in history like this is amazing.” Chowhury, who established the British Education Awards and has participated in a number of lengthy walks for charitable causes in both nations, was recognized for his exceptional contributions to education, philanthropy, and community relations. During the ceremony, Labour’s deputy leader and MP for Ashton and Failsworth, Angela Rayner, lauded the former COVID marshal and Commonwealth Games ambassador for his accomplishments.

Chowdhury discussed the inflow of Bangladeshi immigrants to Oldham in the 1960s and 1970s, as well as the proliferation of entrepreneurial firms. According to him, Bangladesh’s economy is growing, and Oldham firms have been able to enter new markets on the Indian subcontinent. “When Bangladeshis first arrived here they spoke about Bangla Para, a small, united community. Since then, we have branched out into every area of life, in particular business and philanthropy, which often goes hand in hand,” he said. “Our community is now a who’s who of entrepreneurs, leaders, top civil servants and even people in the media and politics – and I am so proud to be honored by them and for them.”

According to Suhana Ahmed, editor-in-chief of the British Bangladeshi Who’s Who, the gala event has become popular among the British-Bangladeshi community for showcasing exemplary role models. She also stated that the event is significant as the media and society are now questioning the merits of migration. Additionally, this helps to emphasize the wide and significant contributions made by British Bangladeshis. “We have continued in our tradition to present Awards to the best of the best, and I am sure that you will agree with me that these individuals are deserving,” she said.
