Christmas brings on a Budget Strain

Australia (Commonwealth)_

As the holiday season approaches, Australians are grappling with the impact of rising costs, leading many to reconsider their traditional Christmas plans, or in some cases, abandon them altogether. A recent nationally representative survey conducted by the comparison website Finder, encompassing 1,063 respondents in October, unveiled that 8 percent of Australians—equivalent to 1.6 million individuals—were opting out of their Christmas festivities due to the escalating cost of living.

The survey further disclosed that 43 percent of participants intended to scale back their holiday spending, while 41 percent planned to adhere to their usual Christmas traditions. Additionally, 10 percent of those surveyed revealed they do not celebrate Christmas. A notable generational disparity emerged, with 62 percent of both Gen Z and Gen Y members expressing intentions to reduce spending or cancel Christmas plans. In contrast, for Gen X and baby boomers, these figures were 47 percent and 31 percent, respectively. Gender differences also played a role, as 52 percent of women indicated a reduction in Christmas spending compared to 34 percent of men. According to Sarah Megginson, a personal finance expert at Finder, the festive season’s notorious reputation for being an expensive time of year is exacerbated by the current economic challenges, characterized by high inflation and interest rates.

Megginson highlighted the financial strain on households, emphasizing that mortgage repayments now demand thousands of dollars more annually than the previous year. In response to these challenges, Megginson offered practical Christmas cost-saving tips, including opting for Secret Santa or Bad Santa instead of traditional gift-giving, sharing the costs of presents and food with others, creating homemade gifts, and considering the gift of time and services. For those determined to maintain a festive atmosphere without breaking the bank, Megginson suggested taking advantage of pre-Christmas sales. However, she cautioned against succumbing to the spirit of festive giving without considering one’s budget constraints. In this challenging economic climate, Australians are encouraged to approach the holiday season with a thoughtful and financially responsible mindset, ensuring that celebrations remain joyful without causing undue financial strain.
