Clean hydrogen certification system signed by Trinidad and…

Trinidad and Tobago, certified as the only Caribbean Community (CARICOM) country that has so far signed on to an agreement system for clean and low-carbon hydrogen manufacture in the region.

The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the Latin America Partnership Organization (OLADE) have initiated “Decarbonizing LAC” declaration for large industry and announcing CertHiLAC, an authorization system for clean and low-carbon hydrogen manufacture in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), underlining a regional obligation to a clean and low-carbon hydrogen economy.

CertHiLAC will guarantee product traceability, contributing comprehensive information on carbon intensity and manufacture technology, and will comprise environmental and social sustainability qualities. The goal is to enable exports of clean hydrogen to other regions, the IDB informed.

It said so far Bolivia, Argentina, Colombia, Chile, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, Honduras, Panama, Paraguay, Trinidad and Tobago, and Uruguay have contracted a joint declaration for CertHiLAC application.

The Washington-based financial organization said district institutions and business associations such as the Latin American Steel Association (ALACERO), the Inter-American Cement Federation (FICEM), LAC Clean Hydrogen Action and OLADE have recognized the ‘Decarbonizing LAC’ declaration.

Supporting organisations will work together to drive innovation and sustainability concentrating on utilizing clean hydrogen, capturing and storage of carbon, electrifying procedures, producing renewable energy, cultivating energy efficiency, and encouraging industrial clusters, the IDB said, adding that other hard-to-abate segments such as heavy transport and fertilizers are welcome to link in the future.

IDB said it has taken the prospect at the current United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) to reveal two related publications. Accelerating Decarbonization of Heavy Manufacturing in Latin America and the Caribbean and Guide for the application of a Hydrogen Certification System in Latin America and the Caribbean.

It stated, these publications deliver a thorough investigation of the region and summaries action strategies for the impending stages.
