UK (Commonwealth Union)_ Manufacturers and policymakers in Mauritius have gained valuable insights and skills in advanced manufacturing through a strategic initiative by the Commonwealth Connectivity Agenda (CCA). Acknowledging the pivotal role of manufacturing in development, economic growth, and job creation, the CCA strengthened its digital industrial policy support by organizing a series of capacity-building workshops in Mauritius. To bolster policy development, the CCA collaborated with Mauritius’ Ministry of Industrial Development, SMEs, and Cooperatives, facilitating training sessions for Mauritian policymakers and manufacturers across key sectors.

The customized workshops provided participants with the opportunity to delve into the adoption of Manufacturing 4.0 technologies and processes. As a foundational component of its assistance to member states, the Commonwealth Connectivity Agenda developed “A Policymaker’s Guide to Manufacturing 4.0,” showcasing the transformative potential of new digital technologies on industrial development. This guide serves as a practical tool, aiding policymakers in leveraging the opportunities presented by Manufacturing 4.0 for their economies.

The transformative technologies encompass machine learning, artificial intelligence, big data analytics, and IoT sensors. These innovations offer substantial potential for manufacturing businesses, unlocking increased efficiency, productivity, and sustainability across their operations. The program, launched in collaboration with the University of Warwick’s WMG, featured capacity-building workshops for public sector policymakers involved in industrial policymaking. Additionally, tailored sessions were conducted with promising manufacturers in priority sectors for Mauritius’ industrial development.

These workshops identified pathways to implement or enhance automation, improve data collection and analysis, and instigate positive organization-wide changes in culture and approaches to digital transformation. For Commonwealth nations, cultivating a more technologically advanced industrial base can result in robust and sustainable economic growth, improved integration into global supply and value chains, and the creation of high-quality jobs and employment opportunities.

This program represents the second stage of the CCA’s pilot Manufacturing 4.0 implementation initiative in Mauritius, building upon a prior fact-finding study assessing the current levels of digitalization and readiness for transformation among Mauritian manufacturers. Looking ahead, the Commonwealth Connectivity Agenda aims to extend the success of this pilot program to more countries and regions within the Commonwealth, fostering widespread advancements in manufacturing capabilities.
