South Africa hosted the 69th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference. The location for the conference was in Cape Town. The conference commenced from 13 to 19 September 2026, and it ended up bringing together parliamentarians and parliamentary officials from all throughout the Commonwealth. While the event was organized by the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA), the gathering was mainly focused on the role of legislatures in responding to changes in the international political and legal environment.
The main theme which the conference followed under was “Strengthening International Law and Parliamentary Democracy in a Changing World Order: Commonwealth Leadership,” the conference provided a forum for discussions on various aspects and topics. These factors included democracy, international law, equality, sustainability and parliamentary cooperation. South African Parliament clearly stated that the meeting came as countries face geopolitical uncertainty, inequality, climate-related pressures and challenges which are affecting democratic institutions.
The program went far beyond the main conference. Delegates ended up participating in the CPA General Assembly, workshops and meetings which involved Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians, Commonwealth Parliamentarians with Disabilities and the CPA Small Branches network. The Society of Clerks-at-the-Table also held its 60th meeting during the week.
Gender equality and social issues featured prominently in the gathering. A session on legal reform ended up being an examination of approaches which can be taken to remove discriminatory laws which are at present affecting women and girls. Other events addressed women’s, children’s and adolescents’ health and menopause. Parliamentary action on water and environmental sustainability was also included in the program.

The first Green Mace awards were also presented to recognize environmental and sustainability initiatives by parliaments.
The conference concluded and ended with discussions intended to strengthen parliamentary cooperation across the Commonwealth, while Canada was confirmed as host of the 70th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference in 2027.
