TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO – One woman had to be treated at hospital for a gunshot wound following a shooting incident in Port-of-Spain.

According to police, the 27-year-old of Eastern Quarry, Laventille was injured around 1.18 am on July 31, when she stood in front of Harry’s Punch cart which was stationary outside New City Mall, Independence Square.

Around 1:08 am on Sunday, officers at Besson Street Police Station, viewing camera footage, observed a white Nissan Tiida parked at the top of Piccadilly Street in the vicinity of the Drag Mall and an unknown man reportedly conducting surveillance on the police station.

As two officers approached the man, he quickly entered the waiting vehicle which sped off. Despite instructions to stop by the officers, the driver is said to have continued to evade lawmen and the suspect reportedly fired two shots in the direction of the officers who returned fire.

As the officers gave chase on foot along Independence Square South, the suspect reportedly shot at the officers a second time, again prompting them to return fire, before the car drove towards South Quay.

As the two officers returned to the station and called for back-up, they received a report of a woman suffering from gunshot wounds. Upon arriving at New City Mall, they saw the woman bleeding from a wound to her right foot. She claimed the gunshots had emanated from the George Street area.

The victim was taken to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital (POSGH) where she was treated and remains in a stable condition.

As part of the investigation, officers viewed camera footage going back several hours and observed the same white Tiida driving around the Besson Street Police Station several times, before parking at Piccadilly Street around 12.25 am.

They also observed the suspect attempting to gain access to the station via the entrance on the western side. Officers were unable to provide a motive for the incident but said security measures had been increased in and around the station.
