TUVALU (Commonwealth Union)_Its diaspora still wants a somewhere to call home after Tuvalu disappears beneath rising seas, and that place might be a virtual replica of the tiny Pacific nation. Tuvalu’s 12,000 residents are pondering the future as global warming threatens to sink the island nation by the end of the century.

Tuvaluans needed “something they can grasp on to,” Dr. Eselealofa Apinelu, a former attorney general of Tuvalu and current high commissioner to Fiji, said at the State of the Pacific conference on Thursday. Before Tuvalu vanishes, we should always be able to remember it as it is, she said at the symposium, which was hosted by the Pacific Affairs Department of the Australian National University.

Tuvalu’s ideals and culture might be preserved via a “digital twin” that is kept in a location similar to the metaverse. It must be kept in some place that there once existed a nation called Tuvalu, according to Apinelu. It’s kind of the final resort, Dr. Apinelu added.

“When the unthinkable occurs and Tuvalu appears to truly vanish, I believe the objective is to save it, conserve it in a state so that future generations of Tuvaluans can gaze into it. That’s the digitized notion,” she said. “But we are unable to digitize humans. Speaking about the land is simple. We still have to decide how to handle individuals in that situation, but we need to involve people.”

Dr. Apinelu urged nations to grant Tuvaluans easier access in the interim so they can look into alternate residences before the rising seas force them to migrate. This demand included Australia. According to her, “We believe our ideals of shared responsibility, they are beliefs that may actually assist a person settle down correctly and respect the laws of individual countries.”
