Diabetes the silent killer

-

Gestational diabetes is hyperglycaemia with above normal blood glucose values but below those diagnostic of diabetes. Gestational diabetes primarily occurs during pregnancy. Women with gestational diabetes may experience complications during pregnancy and delivery. By parental screening gestational diabetes can be diagnosed, rather than through common symptoms. Lifestyle changes are the best way to prevent diabetes. Not smoke tobacco, eating a healthy diet, minimum 30 minutes of exercise daily and maintain a healthy body weight.

WHO aims to support the adoption of effective measures to prevent and control of diabetes and complications. Mainly in low and middle income regions. To this end, WHO lists the scientific guidelines for the prevention of major none communicable diseases which include diabetes. Develops norms and standards for diabetes diagnosis and care.

A resolution on strengthening prevention and control of diabetes was agreed by the world health assembly in May 2021.

In May 2022 the world health assembly agreed upon five global diabetes coverage and treatment targets to be achieved by 2030.
