A recent poll shows that many people in the United States do not support the country’s military actions against Iran. NPR, PBS News, and Marist Poll conducted the survey. It suggests that a majority of Americans are uncomfortable with the ongoing conflict and would prefer to avoid further military involvement.
According to the results, 56 per cent of Americans said they oppose or strongly oppose the U.S. military campaign in Iran. In comparison, 44 percent said they support or strongly support the operation. Only a tiny number of people, less than 1 percent, said they were unsure about their opinion.
The level of support and opposition has not changed much recently. When Americans first discussed military strikes against Iran, a similar survey in January revealed almost the same division among them. This suggests that public opinion about the issue has remained fairly steady.
Political affiliation also affects how people feel about the situation. Members of the Democratic Party are far more likely to oppose the military action. About 54 per cent of Democrats said they strongly oppose the campaign. In contrast, only about 7 per cent of people from the Republican Party expressed strong opposition. Independent voters fall somewhere in the middle, with about 31 per cent saying they strongly oppose the military effort.
Another survey conducted by NBC News reported similar findings. That poll showed that 54 per cent of voters disapprove of the way Donald Trump is managing the conflict with Iran, while 41 per cent approve of his actions. Around 5 percent of respondents said they were unsure or had no clear opinion.
Despite these results, Donald Trump said public opinion will not change his decisions. He stated in an interview with the New York Post that he will stick to his plan and is unconcerned with polling results. Tensions grew after joint strikes by the United States and Israel targeted Iranian military and nuclear sites.
Some of the attacks reportedly struck areas linked to Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei. Officials in the Trump administration argue that the strikes were necessary because Iran could become a nuclear threat. However, some experts and lawmakers question whether the danger was immediate, suggesting that the threat from Iran may not escalate to a nuclear level in the near future.
The poll also found that most Americans still see Iran as a security concern. More than 80 per cent believe Iran poses some level of threat to the United States. However, fewer than half consider it a major threat. Around 40 percent describe it as a minor threat, while about 15 percent say Iran is not a threat at all.
Meanwhile, members of Congress continue to debate whether the president has the legal authority to carry out military action without approval. Republican lawmakers have recently blocked attempts to limit Trump’s war powers. The survey was conducted between March 2 and March 4 and included 1,591 adults from across the United States. The poll has a margin of error of about 2.8 percentage points.
