Dominica marks 44 years of independence

DOMINICA (Commonwealth Union)_Dominica, formally known as the Commonwealth of Dominica, is a small Caribbean country with a population of 72,000 people. Yet, it has a vibrant culture and an interesting past.

Dominica celebrates independence in a unique way because of its long history and connections with so many colonial powers, as well as the impact of enslaved people from West Africa. Nevertheless, Dominica uses the independence celebration to emphasise its cultural richness, draw attention to its diversity, and reach out to its neighbours in one grand celebration that is known as their Independence celebration each year, beginning on the 23rd of November.

The Dominican Republic is known for having a resilient and strong population. In the fight for independence, they were one of the first colonies to have a black-controlled legislature in 1838, and they have continued to demonstrate resistance and highlight their own individual bravery as a people, as they proudly assert themselves on the small island.

Except during the Pandemic, Dominica’s musical Creole Festival is known for its variety of music, its richness of Caribbean music offerings, and exhibits all forms, types, and genres of music through the celebration, so the musical festival is a major part of the Dominican people’s Independence celebration.

Because of its genuine reliance on the tourism sector, Dominica has had a difficult time rebounding from COVID and has sustained considerable damage from storm Maria, from which they are currently recuperating. Nevertheless, the future is bright for these extraordinarily brave and strong people.

The IMF anticipates that over the next two to three years, the economy will expand at a rate of 5%, and the direction of the economy is encouraging in terms of investment opportunities and the tourism sector, ecotourism, information and technology, education, and alternative energy, including thermal energy.

Dominica is on the mend after both the hurricane and COVID, and the business community, like us, is optimistic about the island’s future. We should commend and congratulate the people of the Commonwealth of Dominica, which is culturally rich with its jing ping music, a traditional Dominican music, the Quadrille, and belly dance, which are displayed at all of the village festivals throughout this celebration, and thus there is a good blend of European and African heritage, mixed with the local Indian flavour.
