Dr S Jaishankar chats with Indians in Singapore

Diaspora (Commonwealth Union) _ Dr S Jaishankar, India’s External Affairs Minister, recently captivated members of the Indian diaspora and students in Singapore during a lively three-hour session at the Quantum Arena of One World International School Campus. The event, part of his 3-day visit to Singapore for his book tour following the release of ‘Why Bharat Matters’, showcased his insights on India’s economic progress, diaspora relations, and future aspirations.

Reflecting on India’s resilience amidst the pandemic, Dr Jaishankar highlighted the nation’s remarkable bounce-back, attributing it to streamlined business regulations, rural infrastructure investments, and digitization initiatives. Addressing questions from students and the audience, he demonstrated flair and poise in discussing topics ranging from sustainability to start-up culture.

The event, attended by business professionals, educators, and members of the Indian community, commenced with a traditional ‘Ganesh Vandana’, symbolizing auspicious beginnings. A poignant 20-minute documentary on Indian freedom fighter Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose and his ties to Singapore underscored India’s rich history and its enduring heroes.

Dr Jaishankar emphasized the significance of honoring Netaji Bose, whose statue was recently unveiled in the Indian capital. Describing Netaji as a beacon of inspiration, he underscored the importance of acknowledging the struggles that paved the way for India’s progress on the global stage.

Furthermore, Dr Jaishankar stressed the importance of investing in India’s people and fostering economic opportunities for all. He emphasized the role of nurturing roots and fostering prosperity in shaping a more inclusive and sustainable future for the nation.

During his visit, Dr Jaishankar also met with Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and delivered a lecture at the Institute of South Asian Studies. This visit marked his maiden appearance at the Global Village Campus and his third visit to the Global Indian International School, reaffirming the enduring bond between India and Singapore.
