Empowering Zimbabwe’s San Community

Africa (Commonwealth Union) _ In a groundbreaking initiative, the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) has embarked on a mission to provide educational opportunities for members of the San community in Tsholotsho district, Matabeleland North. This endeavor, aligned with the principles of inclusivity championed by the Second Republic, aims to uplift previously marginalized communities and pave the way for a more equitable society.

Under the visionary leadership of President Mangagwa, Zimbabwe has undertaken affirmative action measures to integrate the San community into various sectors of the economy. Recognizing the importance of education as a catalyst for empowerment, the ZPCS has taken a proactive stance by waiving traditional entry requirements for San community members seeking to join the correctional services.

Commissioner Netsai Habano, overseeing ZPCS operations in Matabeleland North, revealed that 15 individuals from the San community have been recruited to participate in a specialized training program. This cohort, comprising both males and females ranging from 18 to 29 years old, represents a significant step towards fostering diversity within the correctional services.

The educational initiative extends beyond mere recruitment, with plans in place to provide informal learning opportunities at the Anju center. This holistic approach acknowledges the historical educational deprivation experienced by many San community members and seeks to address this disparity by offering tailored educational programs.

Located on the outskirts of Bulilima District and Tsholotsho District, the San community has long been marginalized, lacking access to essential services and opportunities. However, with the implementation of targeted interventions under the Second Republic, there is newfound hope for a brighter future.

The empowerment of the San community not only enhances their socio-economic prospects but also enriches the fabric of Zimbabwean society as a whole. By fostering inclusivity and providing educational pathways, Zimbabwe takes a significant stride towards building a more equitable and prosperous nation.
