Ethiopian government delegates meet rival Tigray forces for peace talks

-

Pretoria, South Africa (Commonwealth Union)_Deeply rooted in the core of the struggle to accumulate power, the war broke out two years ago as the Ethiopian forces conquered more regions in Tigray. What initially started as a conflict of power struggle between the federal government and Tigray authorities who ruled the country until Abiy Ahmed became Prime Minister in 2018, is now a full-blown warzone having seriously injured and killed many innocent lives.

From data gathered after the outbreak of the war, it has been reported that this brutal conflict has killed thousands, displaced millions and have left hundreds of thousands in a state of starvation as a result of disruption of resources.

It has been reported that the Ethiopian government was due to meet with the Tigray authorities in an attempt to enforce a peaceful resolution as a plausible solution to end the brutal war that is taking lives of people who are on the brink of famine, whilst facing other difficulties to survive due to the war. This was confirmed by the Ethiopian government which stated that they had left for South Africa for the peace talks which are to be mediated by the African Union.

“The Government of Ethiopia views the talks as an opportunity to peacefully resolve the conflict and consolidate the improvement of the situation on the ground,” it said.

On the other hand, it was confirmed by Kindeya Gebrehiwot, who is a spokesperson for the Tigray forces that their delegation had already arrived. Gebrehiwot took to his Twitter to state that there was no military solution to this grave problem. He also pressed for immediate cessation of hostilities, unfettered humanitarian access and withdrawal of Eritrean forces who supported the Ethiopian troops during the war. The Tigray forces were led by one of their top generals Tsadkan Gebretensae and spokesperson Getachew Reda.

Whilst both parties had committed to being present at the peace talks in South Africa earlier this month, this important discussion was delayed because of logistical reasons deterring the continuation of the talks.
