Toronto, Canada (CU)_ SickKids, the Hospital for Sick Children, is the largest hospital in Canada devoted to improving the health of children and is one of the nation’s most prolific research facilities. As part of the SickKids VS Limits Campaign, the hospital is aiming to break down the barriers that prevent it from providing consistent medical services to all children. The barriers such as location have been made further more difficult by the pandemic.

SickKids was able to defeat these limitations because of the generosity of contributors such as FedEx, without risking the well-being and safety of patients, families, and staff. FedEx pledged to help deliver medicines, drugs, and medical devices to select SickKids patients in the beginning of the pandemic in an attempt to initiate its FedEx Cares “Delivering for Good” project, where FedEx utilized its world-wide network and logistics experience to assist organizations with mission-critical needs in the midst of catastrophe and for special shipments.

FedEx made more than 300 deliveries throughout Ontario to ensure that patients get what they need without having to leave their homes. The partnership between SickKids and FedEx supported families of immunocompromised children to stay indoors during the pandemic. They provided life-saving medicine for young kids with organ transplants and cancer. This ultimately helped to keep patients safe in the hospital by restricting their exposure to people outside of the facility.

FedEx courier Abelardo (Abel) Villalon who delivered essential medicine and supplies to the children and their families expressed his satisfaction in the service and detailed the process. He said, “SickKids provides valuable programs and services that support our Canadian children and communities. As a FedEx courier, I feel fortunate to have SickKids as part of my daily route. I feel I contribute in making a difference, no matter how small, by delivering medicines and medical supplies to those who are counting on these packages urgently and for most on a daily basis. As we work together through these tough times, we must stay focused on what is important and that is to continue providing the best service to those in need.”
