Companies will soon face firmer requirements when appointing foreign nationals for temporary work in Canada. Temporary foreign labor helps keep Canada competitive by satisfying short-term labor and services gaps and can assist foreign nationals improve practical experience in Canada. Minister of Employment, Workforce Development, and Official Languages Randy Boissonnault, publicized that some time-limited actions under the Temporary Foreign Workers (TFW) Package Workforce Solutions Road Map will not be rehabilitated and will end this spring.

Companies in Canada must first attain a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) to prove that no Canadian labor is obtainable to accomplish a similar job. Effective May 1, 2024, new Labour Market Impact Assessments (LMIAs) will be binding for six months (a reduction from 12 months) to guarantee precise labor market needs. All companies acknowledged in the 2022 Workforce Solutions Road Map will have a decrease from 30 percent to 20 percent of their entire staff that can come in via the Temporary Foreign Worker Program, under the low salary stream, with an exclusion for the construction and health care segments.

Initiating from May 1, 2024, LMIAs will be binding for 6 months, giving overseas nationals a reduced amount of time to apply for a work permit.
