Global (Commonwealth Union) – October 17th marks the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, an occasion that serves as a poignant reminder of the dire socio-economic disparities that persist across the globe. The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, also known as World Poverty Day, was officially declared by the United Nations in 1992, though its origins date back to 1987 when a group of activists in France, led by Father Joseph Wresinski, initiated a movement to commemorate the suffering of those living in poverty. They chose October 17th to coincide with the call to action from Wresinski.
This day was recognized as an opportunity for governments, non-governmental organizations, and individuals to come together to work towards eradicating poverty, promoting social inclusion, and protecting the rights of those living in poverty.
Poverty remains a pressing global challenge that affects millions of people worldwide. While there has been substantial progress in reducing the global poverty rate over the past few decades, there is still much work to be done. The crisis has highlighted the fragility of socio-economic systems, emphasizing the urgency of addressing poverty and inequality. The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty calls for global solidarity and collective action. It encourages governments to formulate effective policies, businesses to engage in responsible practices, and individuals to participate in their communities and support initiatives that empower those living in poverty.
