“For me, this recognition is more than a medal,” Mathiaparanam said. “It tells the story of a young Tamil newcomer who arrived in Canada as a refugee with a dream, served this nation for nearly thirty years, and now stands as the first Tamil-Canadian refugee in our military’s history to retire and be appointed to the Order of Military Merit.” A proud alumnus of Jaffna Hindu College, Mathiaparanam retired from service on April 1, making the timing of this honor even more poignant. His story, from fleeing civil war in Sri Lanka to establishing a home in Canada and advancing through the military ranks, exemplifies both personal fortitude and a strong dedication to his chosen country.

Mathiaparanam’s recognition now stands as more than a personal milestone; it is a beacon for newcomers across Canada who aspire to serve and contribute to their communities. Established by Queen Elizabeth II in 1972, the Order of Military Merit honors exceptional members of the Canadian Armed Forces. King Charles III serves as its Sovereign, with the Governor General as Chancellor and the Chief of the Defence Staff as Principal Commander. Recipients are entitled to use the post-nominal letters “OMM,” a distinction shared by only 1,425 officers since the Order’s founding.
